Adult Day Program at Elim Village (2/5)

Continuing on with Therapeutic Recreation Awareness Month, we would like to mention one of the many programs we offer at Elim Village. One of the ways we support our mission is through our Adult Day Program which focuses on supporting individuals living with Dementia, as well as other cognitive and health challenges.

Program Coordinator Robyn Hansman, shared what she notices most with residents in the program: “Those participating slowly begin to open up – it’s like a curtain starts to lift and they begin interacting with one another; engaging in conversation. That’s the beauty of the Adult Day Program, it uniquely caters to each person, providing enrichment and instilling confidence through activities specifically designed to focus not only on their interests, but also to improve their cognition, physical strength, personal, social and spiritual wellbeing.”

Some more benefits of Therapeutic Recreation is:

  • Increased endurance, strength and flexibility
  • Increased confidence, self esteem and independence
  • Greater involvement in the community, strengthened interpersonal skills and relationships
  • Decreased anxiety and agitation, utilization of stress management skills
  • Enhanced overall well-being
