Have you ever experienced virtual reality? In the last half year, Elim’s Assisted Living residents have embraced this technology as they hike Machu Picchu, swim with dolphins, and even visit the street they grew up on. Virtual Reality allows residents to cross things off their bucket list, like visiting places and events they’d always wanted to see or attend. These virtual experiences help stimulate memories, reduce anxiety and depression, and even ease pain.
As one resident put it, “I enjoy the virtual reality because it gets you away from things and helps you think in different ways. I get to see places that I’ve never seen before and have experiences I’ve never had before. I even got to experience being in England for the Queen’s coronation! I lived in England at the time, but lived in the countryside and didn’t get to witness it. Now I feel like I have!”
