Buy early, move better: Why now is the perfect time
Moving to a new home is a big decision, but timing it right can make all the difference. For Roger and Hilde Cannon, who are moving from Fort Langley to The Cedar at Elim Village Garrison Crossing, planning ahead has made the process exciting rather than stressful.
While the Cannons were familiar with Elim Village Fleetwood, the Garrison Crossing campus immediately appealed to them. “We liked it here, we like the location and how close it is to walking trails,” Hilde says. They put their names on the waitlist, and when they received a call about The Cedar, the final Independent Living building at Elim Village Garrison Crossing, it was the perfect opportunity to start a new chapter.
Thoughtful, stress-free downsizing
The Cannons are downsizing from an 1,800-square-foot, two-floor home with a garage and basement to a 1,272-square-foot unit. While moving to a new home can feel overwhelming, making the decision sooner has given them plenty of time to sort through belongings, organize what matters most, and decide what to let go of.
“Our daughter was very helpful,” Hilde explains. “She helped me go through our things and would ask ‘Are you using it? If not, then get rid of it.’”
Roger reflects on the pace of the transition: “It has been nice to have the time to make this transition and not feel rushed. It’s becoming exciting.” Having time to plan allowed them to sort through belongings, make decisions at their own pace, and approach downsizing thoughtfully—exactly the kind of stress-free move that planning early provides.
Choosing the right suite
Selecting a suite in The Cedar was another important decision for the Cannons. They chose a third-floor unit on the north side, appreciating the natural light without the intensity of south-facing sunlight. “It involved a lot of discussion between us, and we liked the size” Roger says.
By acting early, they were able to secure a suite that fits their lifestyle perfectly—a choice that might not have been possible if they had waited.
Thriving in a community from day one
For Roger and Hilde, community life is already part of the excitement. They hosted a birthday party for Roger at Elim Village Garrison Crossing last year and already have plans to do it again this year. And they’re also looking forward to the wide variety of community events available on campus.
“Community events, hymn sing, performances by school children… that kind of thing was very attractive,” Hilde notes. Roger adds, “Meeting people is an important part of being here. I noticed in the coffee shop that there’s always people around.”
Beyond social gatherings, they’re looking forward to practical conveniences like having a grocery store nearby, as well as the Cheam Leisure Centre, including the swimming pool. “Having each other at our age and still being able to do what we do—it’s just a daily blessing,” Hilde reflects.
