Embracing Family and Faith at Elim Village Garrison Crossing

Like many residents at Elim Village Garrison Crossing, Casey Jansen’s life has been dedicated to family and faith. When the time came for Casey to take his next steps into life at a retirement community, he turned to these two pillars for guidance.

“My family and I moved to Canada from Holland in 1953. I’m the second oldest of nine, and my family has always been close. All eight of my siblings live here in Chilliwack, and aside from living on Vancouver Island for two years, I’ve lived here my whole life,” says Casey. “I wanted to move back to Chilliwack when ferry travel started to become too much. My younger brother helped me find Elim Village, and after we had a tour, I was very impressed!”

Casey was drawn in by Elim’s faith-based roots and the sense of community amongst the residents and staff members. He was also impressed by the Summit Dining Room at The Hawthorn, where residents enjoy five-star restaurant-quality meals.

“Residents at another place I was looking at were not happy with the food there. They’d eat out a lot despite paying for their meals as part of their monthly fees. I’d heard from many others that the food at The Hawthorn was great, and it sure is!” says Casey.

“I’ve had my family over for dinner here many times now, and they love it. When I moved into The Hawthorn, all of them came to the Summit Dining Room and held a ‘welcome home’ party for me! They were all really happy with the food served here.”

Since moving to The Hawthorn, Casey’s days have been filled with joy and connection. Weekly Hymns & Praise gatherings are a highlight, where Casey joins fellow residents in uplifting songs and fellowship. Led by Elim’s Office Administrator, Darlene, who brings joy to residents with her beautiful voice and piano playing, these gatherings are cherished by all.

Casey has also taken to daily walks to nearby stores, or along the Vedder River with his granddaughter and great-grandchildren. For Casey and many other residents, The Hawthorn is more than a building; it’s a sanctuary where family, faith, and community converge.
