Finding peace: Why Flo chose The Cedar
Just two weeks after moving into The Cedar at Elim Village Garrison Crossing, Flo Siemens already feels at home. After losing her husband in 2024, she began thinking carefully about what the next chapter of her life would look like. Rather than waiting until she had to move, Flo chose to downsize and make the transition while she could still enjoy everything Elim has to offer.
We sat down with Flo to hear why she chose The Cedar, and her advice for anyone considering the move.
What first made you start thinking about moving?
After my husband passed away, I started praying about what was next for me. God kept bringing me back to Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.”
One day, Elim came up on my computer and it looked so pretty. I visited with my daughter, Tammy, and as soon as we arrived she said, “Mom, the peace in this place is unbelievable.” It was exactly what I’d been looking for—something simple, safe, secure, and peaceful.
What made you choose The Cedar?
It was brand new, which I loved, but it was more than that. I liked how everything works, including the financial model. I truly felt this is what my husband would have wanted for me. He left me money to be looked after, and Elim is looking after me. That’s what he would have wanted.
How was the downsizing process?
I downsized after my husband passed away. All the grandkids came, and whatever they didn’t want, I took to the second-hand store. I think I took six loads! Then, when I moved here I downsized even more to make sure I only brought what fits.
I like letting go of stuff. You can’t take it with you, anyways. Now, when my grandkids come, we’ll walk for ice cream instead of having it in the freezer. Or we’ll go for lunch at Alpine Bistro in The Hawthorn instead of going and buying all the groceries to make something.

What do you love most about your suite?
I wanted to be on the second floor so I could look out a little more. I chose a one-bedroom and den so I have room for guests. I really like that everything was white because I can bring in my own colours. It’s cozy and comfortable.
Was there something that sold you on Elim?
Being in community. I’m not really a community girl, but I know I need community because it pulls me out. And knowing it was a Christian community, that did it for me. When I come home, I feel safe and secure.
What do you think about the neighbourhood?
I absolutely love it. Everything I need is within walking distance—my bank, insurance office, grocery store—and it honestly feels a bit like being on holiday. My daughters keep saying it feels like a resort, and I agree.
Do you feel like you moved at the right time?
Absolutely, 100 percent. I looked at what life was going to look like without my husband, and I thought about what life would look like in ten years. I wanted to make this move while I still have the energy to enjoy it. I want to go for walks by the river. I want to ride my e-bike. I also didn’t want my kids to have to do this one day. I’m doing them a favour right now.
What would you say to someone who’s on the fence about moving?
It’d be crazy not to! Don’t wait—do it now while you can. It’s a lot of work to move, and it’s only going to get harder. I’m so thankful I made this move now. I truly feel like this is a little piece of heaven, and I’m grateful that God led me here.
