Discover The Power of Story at Elim Village’s Annual Wellness Fair

Everyone has a story to tell—and the ability to inspire, connect, and heal through sharing it. That’s the heart of this year’s Health & Wellness Fair, happening Friday, October 3 at Elim Village Fleetwood. This annual event invites residents, staff, and guests to spend a day exploring the many ways personal experiences shape our health, wellbeing, and community.

What began nearly 20 years ago as a small health clinic coordinated by nursing students, under the leadership of Marian Heemskerk, Director of Community Life, has grown into a signature Elim Village event. “The Fair was created to offer seniors valuable education on health and wellbeing,” says Marian. “It’s now a vibrant gathering with engaging speakers, music, and stories that leave people feeling encouraged and connected.”

Over its 13-year history, the Health & Wellness Fair has welcomed a remarkable lineup of presenters, from health experts to public figures, covering every aspect of wellness—physical, emotional, spiritual, financial, occupational, environmental, intellectual, and social. This year’s theme, The Power of Story, explores how sharing and reflecting on personal experiences can inspire growth, healing, and hope.

Clara Atagi, Community Relations & Event Manager, is once again at the helm. “Stories are powerful. They remind us where we’ve been, inspire us to keep going, and help us feel less alone,” Clara says. “We hope everyone leaves the Fair not only with practical tips for their wellbeing, but also empowered to share their own story, knowing it has the power to make a difference.”

2025 guest speakers include:

  • Thom Racine, Keynote – “A Lifetime of Stories”
Retired police sergeant. Sports broadcaster. Local historian. Award-winning author. Thom Racine has spent more than 30 years uncovering and sharing the stories of Cornwall, Ontario—from the murder of a town constable to the Hall of Fame career of his father. In this session, Thom reflects on how revisiting the past can offer powerful insights and timely lessons for today.
  • Tanya Steele, Emcee – “Legacy & Purpose”
Tanya Steele went from nearly failing high school to becoming a paramedic and respected safety leader. Her journey proves that purpose doesn’t need a grand moment—just the daily choice to make a difference. Tanya will share how the simple belief that “the need is the call” has guided her through decades as a first responder, safety trainer, entrepreneur, and advocate for meaningful leadership.
  • Dr. Khalid Alibhai, Guest Speaker – “Move Your Story: How Small Steps Can Create a Big Legacy”
Dr. Alibhai’s practice is driven by his own experience with a severe herniated disc and car accident. As a chiropractor, he’ll share how the simple act of movement, paired with the power of personal story, can strengthen both your body and spirit—at any age. Through inspiring health journeys and easy-to-follow exercises, you’ll discover how your story is still being written, one stretch and step at a time.
